The Boundaries

Minimal Surface | Two worlds separated by only one surface!

In Shanghai, the phenomenon of chaotic boundaries between societal differences is ubiquitous. Most of the local people recognized that this heterogeneous and pixelized mode had become the urban gene of Shanghai. Perhaps, as Koolhaas says, chaotic Asian cities are more radical and contemporary than we realize. I sought out spatial models that reflected this current urban situation, such as the space system woven by Gyroid or Schoen's I-WP surface. People could enter the interior respectively from two different paths, but they would never meet. They are two worlds separated by only one surface.

Photographs

In 2018, I took thousands of photos of Shanghai's architecture. When I was standing in Qiaojia Lane, I noticed residents on both sides lived in low-rise traditional houses but walking only a dozen meters ahead to Dongjiadu Road, the scene turned into a row of super high-rise commercial buildings. This phenomenon of chaotic boundaries between historic, societal and hierarchical differences is ubiquitous. Most of the local people recognized that this heterogeneous and pixelized mode had become the urban gene of Shanghai.

Delirious Shanghai

As a representative city in the Asia-Pacific region, Shanghai has ubiquitous faults in the urban interface. Through analysis, the spatial attributes of the minimal curved surface can be a good metaphor for this urban state.

Logical Organization Process

In order to study the accessibility of urban space, the grasshopper is used to simulate the flow of water to determine the path with the highest accessibility, and to edit the space with the combination of minimal surfaces.

Mathematical Research on Minimal Surface

Minimal Surface, as a complex and attractive spatial form, requires meticulous mathematical analysis to be proficient in heterogeneous editing and understand its structural logic.

3D Modeling

The imaginary space is expressed through 3D modeling and rendering, and the design process and design logic are revealed through the model through graphic decomposition.

Interior Space Organization

The whole building is edited by minimal surface, and multiple curved surfaces are combined with each other to form a whole. They are arranged at fixed points according to the stress points of the structure, forming a state where different spaces are adjacent and separated.
